BhashaMitra1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how the BhashaMitra mobile application (the “App”) handles information. BhashaMitra helps you learn a language by speaking: you say a phrase in your language and read and hear it in the language you’re learning. We built it to keep your information private — translation runs on your device, and speech is recognized by your device's built-in speech service.
2. Information We Collect
We do not collect, store, or transmit any personal information to us or to any third party. There are no user accounts and no sign-up. The only setting the App saves — the language pair you choose — is stored locally on your device only.
3. Microphone & Voice Input
When you tap the mic and speak, the App captures a short audio clip and converts it to text using your device's built-in speech recognition service (provided by Google). When a speech pack for your language is installed on your device, this runs on-device; otherwise your device sends the audio to Google's speech recognition service to convert it to text. The App itself does not record, store, or upload your audio — it only receives the recognized text. Any audio handled by Google's speech service is governed by Google's own privacy policy.
4. Translation
For the supported languages, translation is performed on your device using Google’s ML Kit on-device models — the text is translated locally and is not sent anywhere. Exception: Malayalam and Punjabi have no on-device translation model. If a translation for them is requested and the App has been configured with a Google Cloud Translation key, the recognized text (not your audio) is sent over an encrypted connection to Google Cloud Translation and the result is returned. The publicly released build ships without such a key, so this is off by default. Such requests are governed by Google’s own privacy policy.
5. Language Model Downloads
The App downloads translation language packs on demand (from Google) over an encrypted connection. These downloads bring data to your device and send no personal information.
6. Advertising & Third-Party Services
BhashaMitra contains no advertisements, no analytics tools, and no third-party tracking SDKs. It requests no Advertising ID. We do not sell or share your information.
7. Permissions
The App may request the following permissions:
- Microphone — only to capture the phrase you choose to speak;
- Internet & network state — to download language models on demand, and (only for Malayalam/Punjabi when a cloud key is configured) to fetch an online translation;
- The device’s text-to-speech service — to read the translation aloud.
It does not request access to your camera, location, contacts, or photos.
8. Data Retention & Deletion
Speech audio is not retained. Downloaded models and your chosen language pair remain on your device until you clear the App’s storage or uninstall it. Uninstalling removes all of the App’s stored data.
9. Children's Privacy
BhashaMitra is a general-audience educational app and is not directed at children. Because it collects no personal information, no data from any user — including children — is processed, shared, or sold.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated “Last updated” date.
